Eun Young Yun

 BIO

Eunyoung Yun is a Korean-American artist living and working in Palisades Park, New Jersey. She was born in Busan, Korea. She received her BFA from Kyung Sung University in Busan, Korea in 1991, and studied figurative oil painting at the National Academy of New York for 4 years from 2008 to 2013. Furthermore, she went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art next to the school every day, admiring how soft and fresh the old masters' paintings were, such as Rembrandt, Monet, and Renoir. It was a huge influence on her artistic path. After that, she devoted herself to her figurative oil painting and has been self-taught training.  In the process, her heart is calmed and healed and try to find her identity. By layering square-shaped color In her background of painting, she makes her object stand out more and connects her own feelings with her object. Her paintings have a soft, girly story.  She has since held more than 30 group exhibitions in Korea, New Jersey and New York. Beginning in 2022, she had several solo exhibitions at the Kaa Gallery in Palisade Park, New Jersey, and as a representative artist, her work is always on view. She is registered with the Korean Art Association, the New York Korean Painters Association and Hackensack Art Club. artist STATEMENT

I am a figurative artist living and working in Palisades Park, New Jersey. For me, painting is the relaxation and healing of tension, and the process of finding my identity. My practices are rooted in what I see and feel, my efforts to find my identity, and my social roles. I believe that art, when used properly, can convey any emotion in a relationship with others. Through this process, I want to find my identity and emotions and not only relieve the boredom of life, but also receive comfort. My art starts from the desire to escape from the complicated modern life and hide. It aims to neutralize stress and heal. When I was a child. When my mother made a blanket, she lay on it for a while and played. I was so comfortable and happy that I felt asleep, as the quilt had a traditional Korean color pattern that it is called seackdong. According to the Korean legend, it  gives energy, disease-free and energetic life, and is mainly composed of five colors. I put most of my painting background on it and paint while wishing for happiness to my object. My paintings have a girly story. My paintings are soft, but I try to create strong structures that catch the eye. For me, oil is a good medium to make this expression possible. I want to find a deep and happy side of me for the rest of my life.

1.How long have you been making art?
I have been dedicated to my art since 2002. Almost 20 years have passed.
  2. Are you artistically trained? If so, where did you train?
I am now 53 years old. When I was 17, I started learning painting to go to art college. My major is art and I majored in oil painting. After then, from 2009 to 2013, I studied oil painting at the National Academy of New York for 4 years.
  3. When, how and why did you choose your medium?
When I was in college, I mostly used oil painting media without deep thinking. But when I came to New York, I saw the amazing freshness of the oil painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and now I am completely absorbed in the oily and fresh charm of oil painting. I am just amazed at the history and amazing expressive power of oil painting. I am very grateful to be able to work with that history.
 4. What is your work and what purpose does it serve you or your community?
For me, painting is my passion, my dream, my healing, everything that makes me more human. May others share the warmth of human nature and be a positive influence to heal together.
5. What do you think are the unique challenges for contemporary artists in 2021?
2021 is a year for thinking more deeply about human nature and human history. Humans are animals that form societies in groups. As an artist, I realised how important social community is. I believe that the challenge facing artists is the right way of life to build communities where I can share art and rely on it.
  6. What aspects of social media do you like and how does it benefit your work?
I mainly use Instagram and Facebook. It's easy to get exposed and it's fun to see people's reactions right away. However, you need to be careful as they are all prone to scammers as well.
  7. If you could change your social media experience and its role in your work, what would it be?
I love that it shares art with social media. However, I have no idea how to solve this, but I am worried that I may receive scams or false messages.
   8. What is the ideal working day as an artist/creator? I paint every day as a full-time artist.
9. Do you have a set work routine?
I set up a set routine for 5-6 hours every day and set aside time to draw. I try to keep time for myself. However, it is usually used in the evening.
 10. In what direction do you want your artistic practice to take place over the next five years?
In the next five years, I want to refine the things I want to express so that I can empathise and share the charm of my paintings with many people.
11. How do you stay motivated when you lose creative inspiration?
I am often motivated by ideas by watching TV, shopping, browsing galleries or looking at many paintings by other artists on the Internet. Then a feeling of inferiority and inspiration come to mind.
   12. What are you working on now?
The current subject, 'City Girl', is inspired by the image of a woman who overcomes by herself in a fiercely competitive city, focusing on emotional expression.
 13. If you could describe your practice and its purpose in a quotation, what would it be?
I want to express the desire, effort, and sincerity of women who must survive in their respective fields in the city. So, I want to congratulate them on their achievements and congratulate them on their efforts. Like them, I endured and overcame many adversities. I need more courage. I believe my paintings will give me courage and comfort. I would like to convey my respect and consolation to those who overcame trials and overcame positions through paintings. I want to express my consolation and respect in one word.
